The autodocâs arm pulled back, and Tanis sat up, slowly flexing her right arm. It would still take some time to fully heal, but, with the additional supports the âdoc had inserted into her bone, it should manage any strain she might put on it over the next few days.
Her left shoulder still achedâa lot. The lightwand hadnât reached her heart, but it had punctured her lung, sliced clear through her collarbone, and shredded more than a few ligaments. Another day in the autodoc would see the wound fully healed, but Tanis didnât have time to lie on her back. Her internal nano could keep repairing the damage while she tended to the mess that boarding the Norse Wind had created.
The freighterâs total complement had been sixteen crew, including the now-deceased Captain Unger. Only six had perished in the fighting, which meant that the Kirby Jonesâs small brig was overflowing. Tanis was considering converting one of the holds on the freighter to a brig, but maintaining security there would be problematic to say the least.
âReady to be up and about, Commander?â Connie asked from the medbayâs entrance.
Tanis glanced up at the redheaded sergeant and smiled. âReady enough. Thereâs too much work to be done for me to be lying around.â
âI wouldnât mind lying down for a day or so,â Connie replied. âWeâve run though that ship top-to-bottom, and those ancient engine regulators are the only contraband we could findâwell, the only serious contraband. Not that those regulators should be illegal anywhere, anymore. The only crime here is that they should be in a museum.â
âCrazy that theyâd put up such a fight over them,â Tanis said. âMaybe thereâs still something hiding over there, and the regulators are a decoy.â
âDumbest decoy ever. Either way, if they have anything else in there, weâd have to tear the ship to pieces to find it.â
âWell, I guess weâll just tow it in, then,â Tanis replied.
<No need,> Lovell said. <The Arizona is thirty minutes out. Their captain just sent a message that theyâll be taking over the scene. Weâre to hold the prisoners, but not question them. Weâre also to leave the contraband on the Norse Wind.>
âSeriously?â Tanis asked. âIsnât the Arizona assigned to Fleet Group 743 out at Ganymede? Whatâs it doing on the InnerSol border?â
<Your guess is as good as mine, but their orders check out. They have Vice Admiral Deeringâs tokens on them.>
âNot much we can do about that,â Connie said, and then flashed a grin, her green eyes sparkling. âNot that I care. Means I donât have to clean up the mess we made over there while searching all their hidey-holes.â
âGood point,â Tanis said with a smile. âWith any luck, weâll get the go-ahead to end this patrol once we hand them over. If not, weâre going to be sucking on whatever food we have in the bottom of the vats.â
âWell,â Connie smirked. âWe may be OK in the food department for a bit. I lifted some of the fresh produce from the Norse Wind.
